This annual report from the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth provides data points to help us determine how our children are doing. It’s not a pretty picture.

Here are some low lights:

  • 20% of Tennessee children live below the poverty line.
  • Infant daycare in Tennessee costs more than tuition and nearly all of Tennessee’s public universities.
  • Tennessee’s public schools need $87 million in infrastructure improvements to comply with state and federal laws.
  • Tennessee children are much more likely to die from a firearm than a car accident, cancer, or poisoning.
  • Nearly 1 out of every four Tennessee high school students seriously considered suicide in the last 12 months.

The information above is merely the summary. The full report can be viewed here.
